JAI HO! – The Ultimate Bollywood and Bhangra Dance Party
Hosted by DJ Prashant
Featuring DJ Sovern-T from Hawaii.
9 p.m. dance workshop, 10 p.m. DJ’d dancing | $5 at the door | 21 and over
Last year “Jai Ho” the Oscar winning song and dance from the East-meets-West movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” captivated dance lovers world over; in 2010 DJ Prashant (born and brought up in Mumbai, India) is all set to make Portland dance with unique live video mixing of popular Bollywood and Bhangra songs at Lola’s room.
Portland, OR Jan 23, 2010 — In August 2009 when Prashant, a Cornell University graduate and Process Engineer at Intel Corporation decided to quit Engineering to pursue his lifelong passion for Entertainment, little did he know that within 6 months he was going to travel across the coast to DJ as well as teach Bollywood-Bhangra at PCC and PSU as a Faculty!
A resident monthly DJ at Kemia Bar (NYC) and Pasha (Portland) where he spins eclectic mix of International dance music to packed houses, Prashant will mix Bollywood and Bhangra Dance Videos on Jan 23rd at Lola’s Room, a premier dance venue most popular for its spring loaded dance floor and weekly 80’s Video Dance Parties.
No previous dance experience necessary as Prashant will teach a Bollywood and Bhangra Dance workshop from 9 to 10 p.m. followed by dance party from 10 pm to 1:30 am, come early for fun dance lessons and stay late to show them off on the dance floor!
Bollywood is India’s Film industry that produces over 2000 films a year (more than the rest of the world taken together!), most of them musicals with prolific dance choreographies while Bhangra is high energy folk dance music originating from north Indian state of Punjab but popular across UK and USA!
Prashant hopes that the blend of danceable beats and LIVE video mixing will make Jai Ho a unique audio-visual experience showcasing Indian music and dance culture to Portland like never before!
A firm believer that “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” for years Prashant dreamt of entertaining people via music and dance, however growing up in a lower middle class family in India meant that he had to score good grades, finish higher education to finally land a secure job.
The words “Jai Ho” are commonly used in Hindi to “Celebrate Victory”, Jai Ho the dance party for Prashant symbolizes the celebration of his once long lost dream now manifesting into reality!
To launch the monthly party at Lola’s room, on Jan 23rd Prashant is also featuring DJ Sovern-T, a good friend and one of the most sought after DJ’s of Hawaii who has worked with (and opened for) artists such as Tribe Called Quest, Ozomatli, Jurassic 5, Black Eyed Peas etc.
DJ Sovern-T Bio:
DJ Sovern-T (a.k.a. Taharba James) has had a love for music from an early age. He started off in the early 90’s as a promoter and DJ in San Diego, relocated to the bay area and played bass in various bands, and then moved to Hawaii where he is now one of Honolulu’s most sought after DJs.
DJ Sovern-T has been a firm fixture in the West Coast and Hawaii music scene for more than a decade. He has performed at West Coast venues such as the Music Box and Century Center in Los Angeles, Baby Rock in Mexico, and numerous festivals in Southern California, Portland and Hawaii, including the Love Fest.
Known for seamless blending, Sovern-T rocks the dance floor with True School Hip-Hop, House, Bhangra/Bollywood, Reggae/Dancehall, Top 40, Electro, Latin, Funk, Soul, Jazz and Eclectic World Music.
DJ Sovern-T also performs all genres of club music on Video (MP4), providing the venue offers video projection or flat screens.
As a promoter, Sovern-T continues to bring to Hawaii some of the best musicians and entertainers in the business.
As the official DJ for the 2005 Hawaiian Islands Spring Break MySpace tour, and a host of the DMC Hawaii Regionals, Sovern-T keeps his hands on the pulse of the scene and delivers a signature sound that is so unique it deserves to be declared ‘Sovern’.
OK! Keep it up. Great party tonight.
Thank you Tom!
