TED’s (Formerly Berbati’s Pan)
Berbati Restaurant, opened in 1987 by brothers Ted and John Pappaioanou was a home away from home for Portlanders of every stripe who were drawn to the big, warm personality of Ted, long conversations about art, life, politics, shots of Ouzo and laughter. The restaurant thrived and eventually spawned a nightclub, Berbati’s Pan, in 1995. The club added energy to the neighborhood and helped fuel the rise ofOldTownas a nightlife district. Papaioanou’s club was a sanctuary for local and national bands alike, a cultural beacon downtown whose stage hosted an endless array of memorable performers.
Due to declining attendance and a down economy, the Pappaioanou family announced in October 2010 that although the bar and restaurant would remain open, Berbati’s Pan would cease hosting concerts. The announcement was followed in November by the devastating news that co-founder and Berbati’s most visible public face Ted Pappaioanou had passed away.
With the coming of 2011, plans to give the former venue an extensive remodel were under way. With approximately half of the space given over to an expanded Voodoo Donut, the new, more intimate space is as warm and inviting as the personality of its namesake Ted Pappaioanou.

Jai Ho! Bhangra Revolution
Jai Ho! (Hindi for victory to you) is a dance party featuring authentic and exuberant Indian Dance Music (Bollywood & Bhangra) with dance lessons, dance performances and LIVE singing – making it an experience where anyone and everyone joins the fun and dances, regardless of age, culture or nationality.
Starting July 30th 2011, Jai Ho! will begin a new residency every last Saturday at TED’s (formerly Berbati’s Pan). The heart of downtown Portland will dance to the infectious Bhangra Beat!
Bhangra is a lively form of folk music and dance that originates from the North Indian state of Punjab. Traditionally performed to celebrate the coming of harvest, the bass-heavy, infectious beat of Bhangra is captivating dance lovers across the globe.
Bhangra Revolution Dance Party will showcase authentic Bhangra music cultivated in two separate but interactive styles – one is centered in India, typically featuring Punjabi Boliyaan lyrics lead by high, energetic tone of vocals. The other sprang from the South Asian community of the UK-Canada-USA diasporas, and is a fusion of various western genres (viz Hip-Hop, Reggae, House, Dubstep etc) which makes it very musically complex.
No previous dance experience necessary as Prashant (Reed College, PCC and PSU World Dance Faculty) will teach a special Bhangra Dance workshop beginning at 10:00 PM.
Come early for fun dance lessons and stay late to show off your new moves!
