BRAZIL meets BOLLYWOOD
SATURDAY, MARCH 9th
Secret Society • 116 NE Russell, Portland
9pm-12am, Doors at 8:30pm • Tickets: $8 in advance / $8 at the door
Brazil and India are vast, warm countries where people love to dance. Portland is a small, damp city where people are starting to get the idea; it’s also home to two of the US’s foremost proponents of fun, participatory dance traditions hugely popular in their native countries, yet still gaining popularity in PDX.
z’Bumba performs accordion-drenched, roots’n’rhythm dance music known as forró (fo-HOh) from Brazil’s earthy Northeast. The music layers lovely bittersweet melodies and Portuguese poetry over booty-moving grooves perfect for the simple couple dance it accompanies. z’Bumba recently kicked off their Second Saturday residence at the Secret Society with a massive Carnaval party, and have lined up a different, exciting musical guest for each event.
Prashant is one of the most exuberant & energetic Bollywood Entertainers of North America, He combines choreography, dance lessons, and singing with an already compelling mix of Indian dance music, transforming audiences into a scene resembling one of those extravagant musical numbers Bollywood films are famous for.
In addition to other exciting collaboration possibilities, Prashant’s set will feature a long-awaited Bollywood style forró dance lesson.
Both artists’ shows have been selling out recently, so advance tickets are recommended.
